The final race of the Vallarta Cup presented racers with light and shifty conditions on a shorter course. Turnout was lighter than in previous weeks, with only Poco Loco Dos representing the Cruising Class, and Shiva, normally a Class D boat starting with Performance C. The other boat in Class D, Harmattan, was unable to sail due to injuries suffered by her skipper, Daniel Kelsey, in a bicycle accident earlier in the week. In the Performance C start, a luffing battle at the start line found Olas Lindas and Mony on the course side of the line at the gun, forcing both to return and restart, but both quickly caught the pack as they moved to the weather mark.
Winds never filled during the 3 hour race, and most racers observed a major wind shift up course, making tactics difficult.
At the evening after party, thanks were given to the hard work of the on-the-water crew, with special thanks to Larry and Yoshie Butts for the use of their boat, Stress Free, as committee boat, and to Dick Locke, who worked as mark set on every race during the month. Also helping on mark set Saturday were Risto Lappala and Bruce “Oz” Osman. Race officer for the day was Andy Barrow.
